4 Tips for Healthy Aging

4 Tips for Healthy Aging

Getting older is a gift, and it can also bring new questions about health. Many of the people we serve are seniors, and many more are caring for an aging parent or grandparent. While we cannot stop the calendar, there is a lot we can do to stay strong, independent and happy for as many years as possible. Here are four simple tips.

1. Keep moving

Regular activity is one of the best things you can do at any age. It supports your heart, bones, balance, mood and memory. You do not need a gym. Walking, gardening, dancing, swimming and simple stretching all count. Try for some movement most days, and talk with your doctor before starting something new if you have health conditions.

Balance exercises are especially important, because falls are a leading cause of injury in older adults. Simple things like standing on one foot while holding a counter can help. If you need a cane or walker for steady support, we carry walkers, canes and other equipment and can help you choose.

2. Eat well and stay hydrated

As we age, our bodies may need fewer calories but just as many nutrients. Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and lean proteins. Some older adults need extra calcium, vitamin D or vitamin B12. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting a supplement, since some interact with medicines.

Thirst can fade with age, so drink water throughout the day, especially in our desert heat.

3. Stay connected and keep your mind active

Friendship and purpose are good for your health. Call family, join a club, volunteer, or attend a free health class. Read, do puzzles, learn something new, or teach a grandchild a family recipe. Keeping your mind busy and your heart full both matter.

Healthy aging is not about doing everything. It is about doing a few good things, often.

4. Stay on top of your health care

Keep up with checkups, screenings and recommended vaccines, such as flu, shingles, pneumonia and Tdap. Know your health numbers, like blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.

Medicines play a big role for many older adults. Taking several medicines raises the chance of side effects and interactions. These steps help:

  • Keep an up to date list of every medicine and supplement you take
  • Use one pharmacy so we can check for interactions
  • Use a pill organizer or Med Sync so refills line up on one day
  • Ask about free delivery if getting to the pharmacy is hard
  • Schedule a free medication review at least once a year
  • Ask questions any time something is unclear

If you care for a parent or loved one, you do not have to manage it all alone. We can coordinate refills, deliver to their door, explain medicines in English or Spanish, and contact their doctors when needed.
