How to Safely Manage Medication Side Effects

By Regional Essential Pharmacist

Safely Manage Medication Side Effects, hands holding pills

Almost every medicine can cause a side effect. That does not mean something is wrong. It means your body is getting used to something new. Most side effects are mild and fade in a few days or weeks. Some are a sign that you need a change. Knowing the difference keeps you safe and keeps you on track.

Here at the counter, side effects are one of the most common things neighbors ask us about. Many people quietly stop a medicine because it made them feel off. We would much rather you tell us first.

Know what to expect

When you pick up a new prescription, ask us what side effects are common and which ones are serious. Read the information sheet in your bag. It is long, but the first section usually lists the most common effects. If you know that a little drowsiness or an upset stomach is normal for the first week, it is less worrying when it happens.

Some side effects depend on timing. A medicine that makes you sleepy may work better at night. One that upsets your stomach may be easier to take with food. Never change how you take a medicine on your own, but do ask us if a change in timing could help.

Simple ways to feel better

For many mild side effects, small habits make a big difference. These are general ideas, and we can tell you which ones fit your medicines:

  • Take the medicine at the same time every day so your body settles into a routine
  • Ask whether it should be taken with food or on an empty stomach
  • Drink enough water, especially in our dry desert climate
  • Stand up slowly if you feel dizzy or lightheaded
  • Keep a short note of what you feel and when, so you can share it with us or your doctor
  • Check with us before adding any over the counter product or supplement
Please do not stop a prescription on your own because of a side effect. Call us first. There is often a simple fix.

When to call right away

Some reactions need attention quickly. Call your doctor or 911 if you notice trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips or throat, a rash with blisters, chest pain, fainting, or confusion. These are rare, but they matter.

Call us or your doctor soon if a side effect is getting worse instead of better, if it keeps you from sleeping, eating or working, or if you just do not feel like yourself. You are not bothering anyone. That is what we are here for.

Why a medication review helps

Sometimes the side effect is not from one medicine but from two medicines working against each other. That is more likely if you see more than one doctor or take several prescriptions. A free medication review lets one of our pharmacists sit down with you, look at everything you take, including vitamins and over the counter products, and spot possible interactions.

We explain what each medicine is for, how and when to take it, and what to watch for. We can do all of this in English or Spanish, whichever is easier for you. If something needs to change, we can contact your doctor for you.

Side effects are a normal part of taking medicine, but you do not have to just live with them. Small changes and good communication go a long way.
